olympic

Well, the obvious talk of the town is the 2010 Winter Olympics. Last night I opted out. There is just something about hockey and curling that will not sustain my interest. However, I do love the moguls and luge. Both these sports seem ridiculously brutal on your body. The moguls just bounce your lower half up and down like a spring--there is no way that sort of motion is good for your knees. The luge is insane for obvious reasons (90 miles an hour on ice), but the physical strength that it takes to hold your body in that position must be excruciating and take years of training! I suppose this is why these people are Olympians, duh. So far I am impressed.

I however am not impressed that the news is reporting that the Olympics is good for Americans struggling during our economic crisis. First, if Americans are so hard up, I doubt they even have a TV to watch the Olympics on. Second, I doubt that people are watching the TV saying, "Wow, the Olympics are really helping me put food on the table." There is no doubt that we cheer on the U.S. and it makes us feel good to see our fellow Americans win a gold, but this in no way makes up for the fact that TONS of Americans are just scraping by, or not scraping by at all. Sometimes the news is just silly. Putting a big Olympic band-aid on the U.S. doesn't let us forget how deep in the muck we really are. Sheesh.

I'm all dried up, people. I am about to write TBS, FX, E! and all other channels that refuse to change out their OVERPLAYED movie repertoire. I seriously could not believe that every single channel I surfed spit back the usual super-hero movie, crappy love story, or the ever-present epic, death-to-the-world flick. They have to know they are doing this, right? Man, it is so frustrating when you just want to spend a weekend night in and it feels like the TV is punishing you for not going out and getting drunk. Let's go TV, quit letting me down. Sometimes I like to drink beer at home.

500x_grammy

Well, it would be just rude of me not to mention the Grammys. There was so much going on at this awards show; I have to say it is proving to be my favorite awards show this season. The Grammys by far put the SAG's to shame.

Why is a music awards show just so much more entertaining to watch than a movie awards show? It's the music, people. The Golden Globes are a snooze-fest because there is no action, no hype and certainly no fun! The Grammys bring out the crazy in everyone and it makes for a darn good show.

Let's start with Lady Gaga. I know, I know, she's a "free spirit" but wearing outfits that may possibly impale you or someone near you is just dangerous. All her antics aside, she's got a great voice and we all got to see that during her duet with Sir Elton John.

Pink has to be second in line to discuss. Pink is insanely talanted on so many levels. I did not know it was possible to sing while soaked in water, suspended from the ceiling by a sheet! All the while, Pink kept her composure and belted out a great tune that remained untarnished by all the theatrics.

Starting at the begining of the awards show, lets talk about "Pants on the ground." You have got to love that America is so consumed with this guy. He gets on American Idol, break dances and rap/sings a song about pants that just won't stay on, and now he's trolling the Grammy pre-show. Lucky break sir, well played.

So, there was a whole lot going on at the Grammys and all-in-all it was actually entertaining and worth watching. To sum it all up though, just like all other music awards shows--congratulations Taylor Swift. 2009 and 2010 were beyond nice to this 17-year-old star.

500 Days of Summer: So, I came into this movie with high expectations. Facebook was abuzz with status updates stating "Watching 500 days of Summer for the 4th time!" After reading how great my friends thought this movie was, I had no choice but to Pay-Per-View it.

Fail. This movie should not pass go. I wanted to love it so badly, and twenty minutes into it I thought I did. twenty-one minutes into it, I realized where it was headed and I did not want to go along for the ride.

The story is about a guy who is always getting his heart broken because he thinks every girl he dates is "the one." And, just like the pattern of his life, he finds Summer, falls madly in love with her and she breaks his heart. He tries everything to win her back, but finds that winning her back is painful and fruitless.

I won't give away the ending, but the movie is a "Debbie Downer." I expected a love story with witty dialogue and a much stronger story line. When you have Hall and Oates playing during the previews you expect quirky, cute and funny--not depressing. Also, all the funny parts of the movie are in the previews. If you are expecting more, you aren't going to get it people.

I hate to give it a 2 1/2 star rating (as if my ratings matter), but I'm going to anyway.

2010 Golden Globes

sandra-bullock-golden-globesfergie

Let's talk about the Golden Globes, shall we? I found it interesting that it was mind-numbingly long, slow and pretty awkward. How long was the walk to the stage for these celebs? Did the event planner forget that an aisle would greatly speed things along? These poor actors/directors stumbled about aimlessly amid a sea of star-studded tables as they desperately searched for the path of least resistance that would lead them to the stage! They really had to work for these awards.

I did enjoy the vast spread of garments worn by all. Some women nailed the "classy but funky" style, while others just did their rock-hard Hollywood bodies an extreme disservice. Sandra Bullock, I'm talking to you. I love you, but let's be serious...did you eat too much and decided that an emipre-waisted purple garbage bag would be the way to sneakily hide your pooch? Aye! You looked a mess and it made me sad.

Oh, and Fergie...your periwinkle-purple prom dress was obviously chosen solely for the boob-enhancing tightness in the chest area. The rest of that "dress" was juvenile.

Ricky Gervais, thank you for drinking a beer on stage. If I was hosting that snooze-fest I'd probably be doing keg stands in the back. I feel for you buddy. Thankfully your tasteless, inappropriate humor livened things up and kept the at-home-viewers cracking up as you made some of the celebs wildly uncomfortable. Golden Globes in a nutshell: Avatar won...a lot.

Ocean's 13

First, don't see Ocean's 13 if you haven't seen Ocean's 11 or 12. Obvious, I know but Ocean's 13 reintroduces characters from 11 and 12 so you need to be familiar with what's going on. This movie is great because it's an inbetweener. This means it lies right in the middle of being a chalk-full-of-action-guy-flick or a sappy-love-cry your eyes out-girl movie.

Ocean's 13 satisfies the ladies requirements by packing the movie with a star-studded cast of very handsome men ie: Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Anyway, men love this film because of all the plotting, scheming and sharp humor. I know this movie is old (as are most I talk about), but if TBS is playing movies, I'm watching them. Go check this movie out if you haven't already. It would make for a great date night movie where you're date wouldn't be overwhelmingly tortured by chick flicks.

toughlove

VH1's "Tough Love" is undoubtedly a hit. The show herds desperate women to L.A. where they are "taught" how to get and keep a man. Steve Ward, the show's host and resident match-maker, is a no-nonsense straight shooter. Ward's spicy tongue and lack of emotional-padding is what makes this show great. Steve makes these loner-women cry, scream, and most of all, perform some dramatic storm-offs. In the end, Steve's constant badgering actually makes these women less pathetic, more refined and somehow more self aware.

The cast of female characters range from: a now skinny, once fat self-loather, a want-to-be rock star mom who hoards animals, and a clingy Southern belle who will trap any man into marriage if given the chance. Sound juicy? It totally is. Somehow this show reaches it's almost soap-opera-esque clutches around our unsuspecting brains and captivates us. We actually want these anything but normal women to succeed in the dating world.

If you haven't watched an episode get to VH1.com and catch up! Otherwise, check it out Sunday nights at 9 P.M.

pride_and_prejudice

Lifetime is always up for love-stricken, sappy movies, so to my surprise this weekend they played "Pride and Prejudice." This movie is killer. Though a bit long--somewhere around 3 hours--Pride is unbelievably engaging! If you are already familiar with the story, good for you. If you aren't familiar and are too lazy to read the book, then rent this movie.

I giggled...a lot. This is in no way a man's man kind of movie. My husband sat in the wings making comments under his breath as I intensely watched the love affair unfold on screen. This is the perfect classic tale of rags to riches. I highly recommend giving this a watch if you've got a few hours to kill!

"The Sing Off" is a new show that did not really spark my interest with its commercials, however as I was feverishly wrapping the last of my Christmas presents that needed to be mailed, this show was on the TV in the living room. I thought sarcastically, "Oh goodie, another show about singing." I really didn't know anything about the show, and after listening in from a far, I had to check out what I was hearing.

I was surprised to see that the show features groups of acapella singers who come up with new arrangements for the music and use their voices instead of instruments to accompany their vocals. It is actually quite good. These people are talented (minus the old broads who sang The Beach Boys).

Also, to my delight, Ben Folds is one of the judges!  Finally, not some lame-o pop star who isn't actually talented (Paula Abdul) judging a singing competition! Though I was interested, I probably won't be an avid "Sing Off" watcher. It was good, but not THAT good. I'm just all too burned out on these singing shows. But hey, it's worth checking out if there's nothing else on :)

"Mannequin" has been playing on the E! Channel all day yesterday and today. This movie is great and of course a nice 80s classic. I forgot for a second how cheesy 80s movies were, yet there is something endearing about them.

Kim Cattrall looks pretty good for her age now, but in "Mannequin," wow, she was gorgeous! I made a comment to my husband, "Jeez, look how long her legs are!" and he responded with, "She probably just has a short torso!" I cracked up at his attempt to try to make me feel less insecure at Cattrall's hot bod :)

Regardless, "Mannequin" is a cute CHICK FLICK, and if you haven't seen it and you are a lady, go for it! If you haven't seen it and you are a man, keep on moving, this is not a "dude flick" by any means. Super pop-tacualr 80s music fills the soundtrack, and fluorescent one-piece jumpsuits flood the screen. It is totally awesome!
